The Digital Battlefield: Cyberattacks Threaten the 2024 US Presidential Election

As the 2024 US presidential election approaches, the stakes have never been higher. While the world watches the political race unfold, a parallel struggle is happening in cyberspace. Foreign state actors are targeting the very heart of democracy—voter confidence and election integrity. Here at Visente, we are tracking these incidents closely, helping organizations prepare and respond to these emerging threats.

What We’ve Seen So Far:

  1. Iranian Reconnaissance (April & May 2024): Hackers tied to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conducted reconnaissance on US election-related websites, focusing on swing states. Known as Cotton Sandstorm, this group’s efforts are likely aimed at identifying weaknesses that could be exploited closer to Election Day. While no immediate damage occurred, the intent to map vulnerabilities is clear. Vigilance is key as these preliminary moves could signal more direct actions to come.

  2. DDoS Attack in Georgia (October 14, 2024): A targeted distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack temporarily slowed access to Georgia’s absentee ballot portal, generating over 420,000 automated requests. Although no lasting damage occurred, the attack aimed to sow confusion and reduce trust in the voting process. It highlights the importance of robust defenses and rapid response capabilities for critical election infrastructure.

  3. Coordinated Disinformation Campaigns (October 18, 2024): State-backed actors from Iran, China, and Russia have launched coordinated disinformation campaigns, leveraging social media platforms to spread false narratives. These efforts aim to deepen political divides and create confusion among voters, targeting the foundations of trust in democratic processes. Federal agencies like the FBI and CISA have ramped up their monitoring, but the challenge remains significant.

  4. Telecommunications Breach by Chinese Hackers (October 23, 2024): A breach of US telecommunications systems, attributed to Chinese state actors, raised alarms about potential espionage. Targeting the communications of both Trump and Harris campaign staff, this incident underscores the risks to information security at the highest levels. The extent of data theft remains under investigation, with federal agencies working to mitigate the impact.

What These Incidents Mean for Election Security:

These attacks remind us that cyber threats to elections are evolving, and adversaries are willing to leverage various tactics to achieve their goals—from direct interference to subtle influence operations. For election bodies, campaigns, and even media outlets, the priority is clear: enhance defenses, deploy advanced monitoring, and ensure that incident response plans are ready to activate at a moment's notice.
